Research in Focus: Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Multilingual Classes
Our September Research in Focus highlights research from Dr. Naghmeh Babaee from Liberal Arts program. As AI becomes increasingly prominent in education, this presentation explores its potential to support multilingual classrooms, including Yorkville classes where students study in English while speaking diverse first languages. Addressing a gap in practical guidance, it draws on the Seoul Declaration for safe, innovative, and inclusive AI to review current applications of AI in education and offer educators recommendations for supporting students’ academic literacy needs. The session will also outline AI’s historical background, its current role in higher education, and a framework for using AI creatively in multilingual learning environments.

About Dr. Naghmeh Babaee
Dr. Naghmeh Babaee is an award-winning researcher and educator with a Ph.D. in Second Language Education and over 20 years of international experience teaching English and Liberal Arts. Her research focuses on socio-cultural and critical perspectives in language education, particularly the experiences and academic performance of English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) contexts. She has received several prestigious awards, including a Best Paper Presentation at the 2023 International Conference on Education and the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. Dr. Babaee also reviews academic journals and delivers professional development seminars, with a strong commitment to advancing inclusive language and literacy education.
