SUMMARY:Research in Action: Action Research in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Action research is a research methodology that examines a problem of practice. Through iterative cycles of “looking\, thinking\, acting” (Stringer\, 2014)\, researchers can determine what actions might provide solutions. For this introduction to action research\, Dr. Dressler will present two action research projects she has conducted as a means to demonstrate how the methodology is conducted. The first example was an examination of her own practice as an instructor of a graduate course in which students learned about and conducted action research (Brown et al.\, 2015). The second example was a five-year project with a team of teachers (Mueller et al.\, 2023). Both examples are intended to inspire others to also undertake action research. \nRoswita Dressler\, PhD\, Professor\,  \nUniversity of Calgary \nDr. Dressler holds a PhD in Education and an MA in German. Her research focuses on pre-service and in-service teacher understandings of second language teaching and learning\, which involve discipline-specific pedagogy\, intercultural competencies\, and innovation in curriculum and design. Pre-service and in-service teachers also bring to their practice their own identity as first language\, heritage or second language speakers\, which they often explore through study abroad and professional learning. As an educational linguist\, she draws from research methodologies that integrate contextual factors: action research\, nexus analysis (a discourse analytic methodology)\, and linguistic landscape analysis\, in particularly of schoolscapes. \nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:Our next workshop will welcome Dr. Michelle K. McGinn\, Professor of Educational Studies at Brock University and Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Higher Education. She is co-editor of The Social Production of Research: Perspectives on Funding and Gender (Routledge)\, and author of 70 scholarly articles and book chapters. She is a keen supporter of residential academic writing retreats and other collaborative writing ventures. Writing for publication involves joining a scholarly conversation with other authors and potential readers. This interactive workshop introduces practical strategies to shape your arguments\, assess potential journal outlets\, craft compelling texts\, and respond to reviewers. DESCRIPTION:Our September Research in Focus highlights research from Dr. Naghmeh Babaee from Liberal Arts program. As AI becomes increasingly prominent in education\, this presentation explores its potential to support multilingual classrooms\, including Yorkville classes where students study in English while speaking diverse first languages. Addressing a gap in practical guidance\, it draws on the Seoul Declaration for safe\, innovative\, and inclusive AI to review current applications of AI in education and offer educators recommendations for supporting students’ academic literacy needs. Her research focuses on socio-cultural and critical perspectives in language education\, particularly the experiences and academic performance of English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) contexts. She has received several prestigious awards\, including a Best Paper Presentation at the 2023 International Conference on Education and the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship. Dr. Babaee also reviews academic journals and delivers professional development seminars\, with a strong commitment to advancing inclusive language and literacy education.

Her role includes the promotion of scholarly and research initiatives including conference presentations and publications among MACP faculty and students. Rosina has also authored/co-authored over 20 publications since 2011\, including her dissertation on social support among Canadian individuals with chronic illness\, published in the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine in June 2024. Her research and publications include equity and access to mental health care\, stress management\, counsellor education and AI\, social support\, workplace mental health\, problem-solving and decision-making\, and technology in education.
